Boston Gum Grafting

Boston Gum grafting is a dental microsurgery that treats gum recession. Many Americans suffer from gum recession due to periodontal disease, rough tooth brushing, crooked teeth, genetics, and lip ties. Gum recession is the detachment of the gum from the tooth which exposes the tooth root. Left untreated, tooth and jaw bone loss are likely to occur. What are the symptoms of gum recession?

Aside from the noticing an exposed tooth root, other symptoms may include:

  • Hot and cold tooth sensitivity
  • Sensitivity or tenderness when brushing
  • Tooth root decay
  • Bleeding gums, especially during tooth brushing and/or flossing

What is the gum grafting procedure?

There are 3 different gum grafting procedures. They include the following.

Free Gingival Graft – This procedure thickens the gum tissue. Essentially, gum tissue is removed from the patient’s palate and applied to the affected area.

Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft – This method is used to cover the exposed tooth root. It also uses gum tissue from the patient’s palate.

Acellular Dermal Matrix Allograft – This procedure uses donated human tissue for gum grafting. Patients may prefer this method to avoid using their own palate which minimizes overall discomfort.

Once the need for gum grafting has been determined, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria. The procedure uses a local anesthetic to help keep the patient comfortable and at ease. Whether the tissue is from the palate or donated, an incision is made at the affected area in order to receive the tissue. This incision is usually a bit smaller than the graft itself. This is to accommodate the need for sutures and allow proper healing. Ultimately, healing can take up to 6 weeks but the patient will notice healthier and natural looking gums.

  • Minimal pain and discomfort
